Walz as VP Pick, Lt. Gov. Flanagan Could Become State’s First Woman Governor

 

August 6 — With the announcement today that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has been picked as Kamala Harris’ Vice Presidential running mate, the renewed vigor in the upcoming election among the DFL party puts Minnesota’s progressive agenda of the last few years of leadership into a national spotlight. And potentially centers the power of leading the state government into strongly feminist hands.

According to the Star Tribune, the state Constitution indicates Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan becomes governor if Walz resigns, but he could wait until after the November election to step down because he is not up for election this year. Flanagan, who is a member of the White Earth Nation, would become Minnesota’s first woman and first Native American governor. “The president of the state Senate would then become the state’s lieutenant governor. The state Senate is currently tied 33-33 pending a November special election to replace former state Sen. Kelly Morrison, who is running for Congress. If Democrats retain control, Senate President Bobby Joe Champion would become Minnesota’s first Black lieutenant governor.”
