The Prevalence of Guns

There have been nearly 80 reported homicides in Minneapolis in 2021, as of October 25. The list below includes 17 gun violence cases in Hennepin County that have someone in custody or sentenced since then, going back to 2019.

There is a gun violence crisis in Minneapolis, and in other cities around the country, which we have been tracking. Our office is in North Minneapolis, where we are receiving local crime reports.

Where the proliferation of guns is coming from is not understood.

Following is a list of gun-related homicides in Hennepin County since May 2021 — and cases resolved and charged since then by the Hennepin County Attorney’s office.

  • October 14 — at 9:46pm, officers responded to multiple 911 reports of gunfire in the 800 block of Franklin Avenue East. Upon arrival, officers located 2 adult males who appeared to have been shot. Officers rendered aid to both victims who were transported to Hennepin Healthcare. A 3rd adult male was grazed by a bullet, a 4th adult male arrived on his own at Abbott Hospital with an apparent gunshot wound, and a 5th adult male arrived at Methodist Hospital with a gunshot wound. On October 17, the Minneapolis Police Department was notified that one of the men who was located at this scene had died. The four others who were shot sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
  • October 13 — at 7:15 pm, Officers from 3rd Precinct responded to the 2900 Block of 5th Av S for multiple 911 calls reporting the sound of shots in the area. Officers arrived and located evidence of gunfire. An adult male, Michael Allen Jackson, arrived at Hennepin Health by private transport and was listed in critical condition. He died from his wounds on October 19.
  • October 6th — at 23:08 pm, officers from the 5th Precinct responded to the report of multiple shots fired near the 1800 block of Nicollet Ave S.  Preliminary information from individuals in the area indicates that the gunfire was related in part to an altercation between the occupants of two or more vehicles. At 23:10, officers from the 1st Precinct along with Metro Transit Police responded to the report of a motor vehicle crash involving two vehicles at the intersection of 5th St N and 6th Ave N.  Preliminary information indicates that the two vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed with gunfire coming from one or both vehicles just prior to the crash.  As a result of the crash, one of the vehicles left the roadway and struck an adult female riding a scooter on the sidewalk. The adult female died at the scene. Multiple adult males were transported to the hospital. All the males had serious injuries apparently stemming from the motor vehicle crash. Guns were recovered from both vehicles and from the scene. Vehicle descriptions associated with the scene on Nicollet match the vehicles located at the 6th Ave N crash scene. The similar vehicle descriptions lead investigators to believe that the two scenes are related.
  • October 1 — At 10:16 pm, officers from the 4th Precinct responded to 911 reports of gunfire near the 4600 block of Aldrich Ave N.  A resident on the 4700 block of Aldrich reported a male in their yard claiming to have been shot. Officers located an adult male with apparent gunshot wounds outside of that residence.  The male was awake and responsive. The male was transported to North Memorial Medical Center where he died a few hours later.  
  • September 29 — At 12:17 am, Minneapolis Police responded to the report of a shooting on the 700 block of Thomas Ave N.  Officers located an adult male with apparent gunshot wounds inside a residence. Investigative measures by officers led to evidence of gunfire located near the 1100 block of Knox Ave N. The male was transported to Hennepin Health where he later died.   
  • September 28 — At 8:42 pm, Minneapolis Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting the sound of shots near the 2700 block of Bloomington Ave and other 911 calls of individuals stating they had been shot. Offices arrived and located three adult males with apparent gunshot wounds.  One male was unresponsive.  Officers provided lifesaving efforts until EMS personnel arrived. The three males were transported to Hennepin Health. The unresponsive male was pronounced deceased at the hospital. A fourth adult male with apparent gunshot wounds arrived at Hennepin Health by private transport. Preliminary information indicates that all four males are linked to the scene near the 2700 block of Bloomington.
  • September 25 — At 6:49 p.m., Minneapolis Police responded to multiple 911 calls of a shooting at the 2600 block of East Lake Street.  Officers arrived and located an adult male who appeared to have been shot. Officers immediately began life saving measures and the victim was then transported to Hennepin Health where he died a short time later. Preliminary information obtained at the scene indicates that this shooting was not a random incident and that the suspect and the victim knew each other.
  • September 25 — at 4:20 pm Minneapolis Police responded to a shooting in the 1800 block of Stevens Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, inside a vehicle who had been shot in the neck. Officers rendered aid and the victim was transported to Hennepin Healthcare. The victim in this shooting, Joshua Fields, age 47, died on October 13, at Hennepin Healthcare. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled the manner of death a homicide from gunshot wound of the neck.
  • September 15 — At 11:49 am, Minneapolis Police Officers were near the 1800 block of 3rd Ave S when they heard multiple gun shots.  Officers located a deceased adult male with apparent gun shot wounds. Investigators spoke with individuals in the area and gathered footage from area cameras to accurately identify all involved parties and what transpired. 
  • September 14 — At 7:59pm, Minneapolis Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation on the 500 Block of 49th Ave N.  In that same timeframe, 911 reports alerted dispatch of a vehicle crash located on Hwy 94 under the 49th Ave N bridge. Hennepin County Sheriff Deputies located a single vehicle crash on the on-ramp from Lyndale Ave N to Hwy 94 east. The vehicle had one occupant: a deceased adult male with injuries including apparent gunshot wounds. 
  • Death on September 11 — On April 10, at 1:28 pm, Minneapolis Police Officers responded to the 3600 block of Aldrich Ave N on the report of a shooting.  Individuals in the area stated that there was a person down in an alley. Officers arrived and located an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The male was transported to an area hospital. The male identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office as Kenneth Darryl Durand died from his injuries.
  • September 9 — At 8:03 pm, Minneapolis Police responded to the 2100 block of Glenwood Av N on a ShotSpotter activation that reported several rounds. A short time later, officers were informed that two adult males had arrived at Hennepin Health in downtown Minneapolis. Both males were listed in critical condition suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. One of the private vehicles was impounded for evidence by police. The other quickly left after dropping off one victim. Officers canvased the area around the scene at Glenwood Av but were unsuccessful in locating any witnesses. On the morning of September 10th, Hennepin Health medical personnel informed investigators that one of the adult males had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
  • September 9 — At 02:47 am, Minneapolis Police responded to the report of a shooting on the 2000 block of Emerson Av N. Officers arrived and located an adult male with grave injuries inside an apartment. Officers provided medical care until EMS personnel arrived. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene.
  • September 8 — At 3:41 pm, Minneapolis Police responded to the 800 block of Aldrich Avenue North on a report of a shooting. Officers arrived to a chaotic scene and located a child, believed to be 12 years old, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers provided emergency aid and paramedics transported the victim to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition. Preliminary information indicates that a verbal disagreement turned violent when at least one person presented a gun and began shooting. Suspect(s) fled prior to officer’s arrival. Medical personnel from the hospital later notified the Minneapolis Police Department that the child died at the hospital.

    UPDATE November 1 — The Minneapolis Police have arrested and booked JEREMIAH MARQUISE GRADY into the Hennepin County Jail.  Grady has been formally charged with Murder – 2nd Degree – With Intent-Not Premeditated for the Murder of a 12-year-old London Michael Bean, and with Murder – 2nd Degree – With Intent-Not Premeditated for the attempted murder of a second juvenile. The Minneapolis Police are grateful to Rev. Jerry McAfee and other community partners who worked with Grady’s mother to bring about this peaceful arrest. 
  • August 29 — 911 calls alerted the Minneapolis Police Department of a shooting at 5:18 pm Sunday evening in the area of Dowling and Interstate 94 (I-94). Officers arrived in the area and located the victim in a vehicle on I-94. The victim, an adult male believed to be in his 30s, had no pulse or respiration. Preliminary information indicates that the two adult males were outside of their cars on Dowling in the area of I-94 when one person shot the other. Both people got into separate cars and fled from the area. The victim went down the eastbound ramp to I-94 from Dowling when he went off the roadway, striking the meter lights and coming to rest along the cement center median on the freeway. 
  • August 26 — Multiple 911 calls alerted the Minneapolis Police Department that several people had been shot at 12:20 am on Thursday Morning on the 3000 block of Lyndale Avenue South. Preliminary investigation indicates that two people were shooting at each other outside of a business and numerous people were injured. Of the 7 people injured, one is in critical condition, five are in serious condition and one is in good condition. All seven victims are expected to survive their injuries. 
  • August 22 — Sunday morning at 2:17 am, a 911 call was placed by an individual who observed a person slumped over in a car on the 300 block of Washington Avenue North. Officers arrived and located an adult male sitting in a car slumped over.  The male was approximately 30 years old. As officers began to assess his condition, they realized the victim was suffering from a gunshot wound and was deceased.  Preliminary investigation indicates that victim was in the vehicle when he was shot.  Additional investigation leads detectives to believe the shot originated from inside the vehicle. 
  • August 15 — A 911 call reporting the sound of shots fired directed officers from the Minneapolis Police Department to the 100 block of West Lake Street at 1:55 am Sunday morning. Officers arrived and located an adult male victim, believed to be in his 20s, suffering from a gunshot wound.  The victim had no pulse or respiration.  Officers began CPR and wound management. Paramedics arrived on the scene and pronounced him deceased. Preliminary information indicates that the occupants of two vehicles were shooting at each other. One of the occupants was shot and the other vehicle fled the scene. The victim died at the scene.  A few weeks later, a suspect was identified and a warrant issued for 2nd Degree Murder for Lionell J. Hicks, 29, of West St. Paul.  Anyone who sees Hicks is asked to call 911.
  • IN CUSTODY — Emmett Nelson, 47, of Minneapolis, is currently in custody. On August 23, Nelson was charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting a female victim near a Minneapolis alley in August 2021.   • August 9 — 11:08 am on Monday morning, Minneapolis Police received a ShotSpotter notification of shots fired in area of the 1600 block of West Broadway. Officers arrived and located an adult male, believed to be in his 30s, suffering from a gunshot wound.  The male had no pulse or respiration. Officers started CPR and wound management. Paramedics arrived and immediately transported the victim to the North Memorial Medical Center. Preliminary investigation indicates that people got into a verbal argument that escalated.  At one point, one person pulled out a gun and the victim was shot. The suspect fled the scene prior to officer’s arrival. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the victim died. 
  • August 8 — 7:52 pm on Sunday evening, Minneapolis Police were notified of a ShotSpotter activation on the 1800 block of Glenwood Avenue North. While officers were enroute, another ShotSpotter activation came in on the 300 block of Morgan Avenue North.  Officers arrived and located an adult male, believed to be in his 20s, in the alley suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim and at least one suspect got into a dispute inside a business in the area and shots were fired, striking the victim.  The victim fled on foot and the suspect continued the shoot the victim.  The victim collapsed and the suspect fled. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the victim died. 
  • August 8 — Sunday evening at 5:17 pm, Minneapolis Police responded to a 911 report of a person shot in the area of the 1200 block of Lake Street. Officers arrived and located an adult male, believed to be in his 30s, in grave condition from gunshot wounds.  Officers immediate provided lifesaving aid and he was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center via paramedics. He died a short time after arriving at the hospital. Preliminary investigation reveals that a dispute between two or more people escalated into gunfire. 
  • August 8 — Saturday evening, August 7th, at 9:06 pm, officers from the Minneapolis Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter notification of multiple shots fired on the 600 block of West Broadway. Officers arrived and located an adult male, believed to be in his 30s, suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers provided emergency aid and he was transported to North Memorial Medical Center by paramedics. Officers were notified that an adult male, believed to be in his 30s, arrived at Abbott Northwestern Hospital suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.  He advised that he had been shot at another address, but it is believed he was shot at the location on West Broadway. Officers were notified by medical personnel at North Memorial Medical Center that the victim transported there had died. Preliminary investigation indicates that several people were standing outside of a business when someone from inside a car shot, striking the two victims.  The vehicle fled the area at a high rate of speed.
  • August 3 — Moments after midnight on Tuesday morning, Minneapolis Police responded to an address on the 2300 block of Dupont Avenue North on a report of a shooting. Officers arrived and located an adult male, believed to be in his 20s, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim did not have a pulse or respiration. Officers began CPR and continued until relieved by paramedics. Preliminary investigation indicates that there was a dispute inside a residence that erupted into gunfire. One person was shot and the suspect fled. Paramedics transported the victim to North Memorial Medical Center, where he later died. 
  • July 28 —Wednesday morning at 2:34 am, Minneapolis Police responded to a 911 report of a person with a weapon on the 4800 block of Aldrich Avenue North. Officers arrived and located an adult female deceased outside of a residence.  A gun was recovered at the scene.
  • July 27 — Friday morning, July 23, 2021, at 3:30 am, Minneapolis Police responded to a report of a gunshot wound victim arriving via private transport at Hennepin County Medical Center.  Officers were met at the hospital by staff who lead them to the Stab Room where medical professionals worked to save the victim’s life.  The victim was described to be an adult male, believed to be in his 50s.  He was listed in critical condition. Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim and another person got into a dispute which erupted into gunfire and the victim was struck.  A possible scene was located in the area of 12th Avenue South and Lake Street. The Minneapolis Police Department was notified that the victim in this case had died.
  • IN CUSTODY — Troy Fowler, 30, of Brooklyn Park, is currently in custody and is expected to receive 306 months in prison at sentencing. On September 16, Fowler pleaded guilty to intentional second-degree murder for fatally shooting an adult male victim in a Minneapolis parking lot in July 2021.   • July 6 — July 3rd at 2:06 am while responding to the area of the 300 block of 21st Avenue North on a report of shots fired, officers from the Minneapolis Police Department were flagged down by people who had a victim of a gunshot wound in their car. Officers called for an ambulance and provided emergency aid to the victim. Paramedics arrived and took over care. They transported the victim, as adult male believed to be in his 30s, to North Memorial Medical Center in grave condition. Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim, and many other individuals were outside on the 300 block of West Broadway when a fight broke out and multiple people began shooting at each other. Two other adult males showed up at North Memorial Medical Center that morning suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds that occurred at the same location on West Broadway. The Minneapolis Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Crime Lab responded to the scene and started their investigation.  No one is in custody at this time. The Minneapolis Police Department was advised that the victim who was originally listed in grave condition died at the hospital.
  • July 6 — 2:43 am on Tuesday Morning, Minneapolis Police responded to Hennepin County Medical Center on a report of two people that had showed up with gunshot wounds. Upon arrival, officers were advised that one of the victims, an adult male, had died and the other adult male victim was in serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries.  Preliminary investigation indicates that the two victims were standing outside on the 400 block of 15th Avenue South when a group of people approached and shot them.  The victims got into a vehicle and drove to the hospital for treatment.
  • July 4 — Sunday, July 4, 2021 at approximately 3:51 pm, Minneapolis Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 26th Avenue North and Logan Avenue North. Officers arrived and located an adult male laying outdoors, suffering from a gunshot wound.  Officers provided emergency aid until relieved by paramedics. The victim was transported to North Memorial Medical Center by ambulance. The suspect had fled prior to officer’s arrival. Preliminary investigation indicates that an incident occurred between individuals familiar with one another.  Gunfire resulted as the interaction progressed. The Minneapolis Police Department was advised that the victim died a short time later at the hospital.
  • July 2 — Friday evening at 6:43 pm, Minneapolis Police officers responded to a ShotSpotter report of shots fired in the area of Colfax Avenue North and 34th Avenue.  Additional 911 reports advised that a person in a vehicle had been struck by the gunfire and they were on the way to the hospital. The Minneapolis Emergency Communications Center notified area hospitals that a gunshot victim may be coming in via a private vehicle. Minutes later, a call came in from North Memorial Medical Center that a gunshot victim arrived at their emergency room. Additional information was received that the victim was a 9-month-old child.  The injury was described as a graze wound to an extremity and it was deemed to be non-life threatening.  
  • June 27 — An enhanced reward has been offered through CrimeStoppers for information in the three separate cases where youth were shot. Anyone with information is encouraged to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Tips may be submitted electronically at www.CrimeStoppersMN.org. A press conference was conducted today on one of these cases: On April 30th at 1:58 pm, Minneapolis Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of the 3500 block of Morgan avenue North. At 2:06 pm, North Memorial Medical Center called the Minneapolis Emergency Communications Center advising that they had a car show up at their emergency room with a gunshot victim in it and reported that the victim’s wounds may be fatal. Emergency personnel at NMMC saved the gunshot wound victim’s life and his condition was moved from grave to critical. Preliminary investigation indicates that a suspect, or suspects, were shooting at the vehicle the 10-year-old boy was riding in. 
  • IN CUSTODY — Robert McCloud, 64, of Brooklyn Center, is currently in custody. On June 22, McCloud was charged with intentional second-degree murder for fatally shooting a female victim in a Robbinsdale house in June 2021.   • June 17 — 9:29 am on Thursday morning, officers from the Minneapolis Police Department responded to a 911 report of possible human remains in the area of the 300 block of Main Street NE. Officers arrived and located what appeared to be human body parts. While staff was working at the scene, they received information that additional human remains were located in the area of the 300 block of University.  The Minnesota Search and Rescue Association was contacted, and they responded with cadaver dogs. They went through the area and did not locate any additional remains. The GO # for this case is 21-132093.
  • June 16 — Wednesday evening at 6:10 pm, a 3rd Precinct Sergeant was in the area of East Lake Street and Cedar Avenue when he heard a volley of gunshot to his west.  The sergeant went towards the sound of the shots. Dispatch aired a ShotSpotter activation on the 1700 block of East Lake Street. A 911 call then came in reporting one person had been shot. The sergeant and responding officers arrived and began immediate medical aid on the victim until relieved by paramedics. The paramedics eventually pronounced the victim deceased. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim, believed to be an adult male in his 30s, was outside of a business when a car pulled up and a person got out and fired multiple rounds at the victim, striking him at least once.  The suspect then fled in the same vehicle he arrived in.  Early indication is that this was not a random act.
  • June 16 — Wednesday around noon, St. Paul Police responded to a report of an aggravated robbery at a business on the 800 block of Arcade Street.  Reports were that the suspect robbed the business at gunpoint. Responding St. Paul Police Department officers located the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it.  When the driver failed to pull over, St. Paul Police pursued. Shortly after, they notified the Minneapolis Police Department that the pursuit was entering Minneapolis and as squads attempted to get into position to assist, the suspect vehicle crashed into a commercial vehicle on the 2900 block Newton Avenue North. The suspect remained in the vehicle and made threats against officers and anyone else that approached his car. Over the next four hours, negotiators from the Minneapolis Police Department’s SWAT team spoke intermittently with the suspect. After extensive conversation, the suspect agreed to surrender to officers.
  • June 11 — Friday, June 11th at about 12:41 pm, officers from the Minneapolis Police Department responded to a report of a shooting on the 1200 block of West Broadway Avenue. Officers located an adult male, believed to be in his late 20s in critical condition suffering from a gunshot wound. The officers that observed the suspect vehicle were able to get the vehicle stopped in the area of Cretin Avenue in St. Paul and they took several people into custody. The Minneapolis Police Department’s Homicide Unit was notified that at 2:30 pm, that the victim, who was originally in critical condition, had died at the hospital.
  • June 10 — 2:55 pm on Thursday, June 10th, Minneapolis Police responded to a report of gunshots and a motor vehicle crash in the area of the 2200 block of Aldrich Avenue North. Officers arrived and located a one vehicle crash with one person gravely injured.  Officers provided immediate aid to that victim until care was taken over by paramedics.  He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center where he died shortly after arriving.  Preliminary investigation leads detectives to believe that the occupants of two vehicles were engaged in a dispute and they were driving north on Aldrich from the 2100 block.  After entering the 2200 block, one vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, gravely injuring a passenger in that vehicle.  The other vehicle fled the scene in a northbound direction. 
  • June 7 — Monday at 6:28 pm, the Minneapolis Emergency Communications Center received numerous 911 calls reporting a shooting on the 700 block of West Broadway.  Callers reported two people were shot: one male and one female.  They advised that the male victim was being loaded into a private vehicle to be transported to a hospital.  Area hospitals were put on alert for a shooting victim to arrive. Officers arrived and located an adult female, believed to be in her 30s, deceased at the scene. Minutes later, officers were advised that an adult male had just arrived at North Memorial Medical Center suffering from a gunshot wound. Preliminary investigation indicates a male party shot the two victims and fled the area on foot before officers arrived. 
  • June 5 — During the early morning hours of Sunday morning, Minneapolis Police responded to a report of two shootings. At 1:37 am, Minneapolis Police were notified that a gunshot wound victim had shown up at North Memorial Medical Center. Officers responded to the hospital to speak to the victim. Upon arrival, they were advised that the adult female victim had succumbed to her injuries. Preliminary investigation lead homicide detectives to the 2200 block of N 2nd Street. 
  • June 5 — At 1:48 am, Minneapolis Police responded to the area of East Lake Street under the bridge that goes over Hiawatha on a report of a person shot. Officers arrived and located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.  Officers performed CPR and wound management until his care was turned over to paramedics.  He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center in grave condition by paramedics.  Officers learned that the victim died a short time after arriving at the hospital.  Detectives learned that a group of people in cars took over the portion of the East Lake Street where Hiawatha passes over it. The people in the cars were driving recklessly and spinning around in their cars causing damage to the roadway when two of the individuals got into a dispute.  The two began to shoot at one another. A stray bullet struck an adult male who had pulled over to watch these vehicles.  The victim was outside of his car when he was struck by the bullet. 
  • IN CUSTODY — Kevion Jamal Gibbs, 23, of Mississippi, is currently in custody. On June 8, Gibbs was charged with intentional second-degree murder for ​​fatally shooting a 33-year-old male victim in a downtown Minneapolis parking lot in June 2021.   • June 2 — The culmination of an investigation has yielded an arrest of an adult male suspect in a double shooting this past spring. On March 28, 2021, officers from the Minneapolis Police Department responded to the 1700 block of East 26th Street on a report of a double shooting. Officers arrived and located two adult male victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. After investigations, Alonzo Marquis Berry, 43, was arrested and booked into the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center on a Probable Cause Attempted Murder hold.  He is being held without bail. The GO Number associated with this case is 21-064115.
  • June 2 — After an investigation, detectives from the Minneapolis Police Department’s Homicide Unit has placed a 17-year-old male under arrest for Probable Cause Murder in the shooting death that happened May 6, 2021 on the 1600 block of West Broadway. He was booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center on the evening of June 1. 
  • May 27 — At 8:32 pm on May 15, Minneapolis Police responded to a reported ShotSpotter activation on the 2200 block of Ilion Avenue North.  While in route, officers were advised that it was a shooting and that a 9-year-old child had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Officers arrived and located a critically injured child. Knowing the ambulance was still some distance out, officers transported the victim to the hospital for emergency treatment. The Minneapolis Police Department was advised that, at 4:04 pm, the child died at the hospital. The GO # for this case is 21-103256.
  • May 26 — Jawan Carroll, 24, of Minneapolis, is currently in custody.   • May 12 — Otis Givens, 45, of Brooklyn Center, is currently in custody.   • May 7 — Thursday evening, May 6th, Minneapolis Police responded to a report of the sound of shots fired in the area of the 1600 block of West Broadway around 5:50 pm. Officers arrived and located an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.  He was immediately transported by ambulance to North Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. The investigators were advised that the victim in this case died at the hospital.
