Unidos MN underwrote a project with Minnesota Women’s Press that enabled us to create a 28-page magazine, in English and Spanish, about constitutional rights, especially impacting immigrants and allies who stand up against unlawful detentions and deportations. Future translations are expected in Creole and Ukrainian.

I remember it like it was yesterday. The beautiful Minnesota winter, my excitement seeing snow for the first time, but above all, the chance to reunite with my father after so many years since he left Mexico in search of a better job.
In 1992, the year my baby brother was born, my dad packed his things, said goodbye to us, and set off for the promised land: the United States. When I finally joined him years later, it was just the two of us, holding tight to our dreams and using our memories of family as motivation to overcome any challenge. He wanted a better life for me and my siblings. I wanted him to feel proud of me.
My story is not unique. Millions of American families have similar stories. Much of this country’s core identity is shaped precisely by similar legacies of immigrants from around the world. At the same time, the complex identity of this country is shaped by the prejudice experienced by people who are non-white, poor, women, or 2SLGBTQIA+.
Today, we are living in a critical moment that will shape not only our future, but the future of the world. It is clear that American society continues to ask itself who should be included or excluded. Authoritarian regimes have become more effective at co-opting power, weaponizing racial tension, and sewing mistrust in government and economic resentment — while blaming undocumented newcomers, immigrants, and refugees for the poverty and unequal conditions of everyday Americans that they are unwilling to address.
It is time to clearly understand what is at stake. Fear and mass deportations serve as a distraction, enabling billionaires and oligarchs to quietly advance their agenda while the rest of us remain divided.
In times of crises like these, it is difficult to fulfill the promises of a full democracy. At Unidos Minnesota, we created this special issue as a tool to support, prepare, and protect each other. It is also an invitation to make a choice: Are we comfortable watching as the progress we’ve built together, generation after generation, is dismantled before our eyes? Are we going to let threats of detention camps and family separations fill our neighborhoods with fear and terror?
Or are we going to finally build together and lead a multiracial democracy capable of fully embodying freedom and justice for all?

It’s no secret that solidarity is the key to creating meaningful change. When communities stand together, we can shape a Minnesota that’s more fair more just, and more loving.
Right now, we need solidarity more than ever. Amid efforts to roll back gains in workers’ rights, in civil rights, and in human rights — that many of our community in this and past generations worked so hard for — it falls to us to defend ourselves.
As the People’s Lawyer, I use all the tools of my office to help keep Minnesotans safe from scammers, make sure workers get paid every penny they are owed, and protect the rights of every Minnesotan. This matters whether your family has been in the country for generations or you are a recent arrival looking to build a bright future.
Those tasks are harder these days, but my Office is up for the challenge. I know Minnesota is up for the challenge. When we’re faced with such disregard for our rights, it can be easy to forget they exist. But remember: no matter how often this administration tries to wave it away, our Constitution is still the law of the land. You have rights. The more you know about them, the better equipped you are to keep yourself and your family safe.

Lo recuerdo como si fuera ayer. El hermoso invierno de Minnesota, mi emoción al ver nieve por primera vez, pero sobre todo, la oportunidad de reunirme con mi padre después de tantos años desde que salió de México en busca de un mejor trabajo.
Era 1992, el año en que nació mi hermanito. Mi papá empacó sus cosas, nos dijo adiós y partió hacia la tierra prometida: los Estados Unidos. Cuando por fin me reuní con él años después, éramos solo nosotros dos, aferrándonos a nuestros sueños y a los recuerdos de la familia como motor para enfrentar cualquier desafío. Él quería una mejor vida para mí y mis hermanos; yo quería que se sintiera orgulloso de mi.
Mi historia no es única. Millones de familias estadounidenses tienen historias parecidas. Gran parte de la identidad principal de este país está precisamente formada por historias y legados similares de inmigrantes de todo el mundo. Y al mismo tiempo, la compleja identidad de este país también se forma por los prejuicios que experimentan las personas que no son blancas, que son pobres, mujeres o LGBTQ+.
Hoy vivimos un momento crítico que definirá no solo nuestro futuro, sino también el futuro del mundo. Está claro que la sociedad estadounidense sigue preguntándose quién debe estar incluido o excluido. Los regímenes autoritarios son cada vez más efectivos al tomar el poder, explotando las tensiones raciales, la desconfianza hacia el gobierno y el resentimiento económico, culpando a inmigrantes, indocumentados y refugiados por la pobreza y desigualdad que ellos mismos no están dispuestos a solucionar.
Es hora de comprender claramente lo que está en juego. El miedo y las deportaciones masivas sirven como una herramienta que permite a los multimillonarios y oligarcas avanzar silenciosamente su propia agenda mientras el resto de nosotros permanecemos divididos.
En momentos de crisis como estos, es difícil cumplir con las promesas de una democracia amplia. En Unidos MN, preparamos esta edición como una herramienta para apoyarnos, prepararnos y protegernos entre todos. También es una invitación a tomar una decisión: ¿vamos a sentirnos cómodos observando cómo todo el progreso que hemos construido juntos, generación tras generación,es deshecho frente de nuestros ojos? ¿Vamos a permitir que las amenazas de campos de detención y separación familiar llenan de miedo y terror a nuestros vecindarios?
¿O vamos a finalmente construir juntos y liderar una democracia multirracial capaz de encarnar plenamente la libertad y la justicia para todos?

No es ningún secreto que la solidaridad es clave para lograr cambios reales. Cuando las comunidades estamos unidas, podemos construir un Minnesota más justo, equitativo y hospitalorio.
Ahora mismo necesitamos esa solidaridad más que nunca. En medio de intentos para quitar derechos laborales, civiles y humanos—derechos por los cuales muchas personas de nuestra comunidad han luchado durante generaciones, nos toca defendernos juntos.
Como el abogado del pueblo, yo uso todas las herramientas a mi disposición para proteger a los Minnesotanos de estafadores, me aseguro de que los trabajadores reciban cada centavo que se les debe, y defiendo los derechos de cada persona en nuestro estado.
