Bodies of Resistance Art Show: Stories of Women’s Power
September 3, 2021 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
‘Bodies of Resistance’ is a collaborative art show celebrating women’s stories and experiences of resistance through photography, paint and printed word. It opens September 3 in Minneapolis.
The show will open with a reception Friday, September 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. at ArtSpace Jackson Flats, 901 18 ½ Ave NE, Minneapolis.
Bodies of Resistance will run weekends, noon to 4 p.m. through September 19.
Bodies of Resistance will combine photographer Suzanne Shaff’s black-and-white portraits of nine women in self-defined poses of resistance or power, painter John Stumme’s life-size renditions of her photos and written narratives of each woman’s personal story by writers Judith Jopp and Maureen McMullen.
The concept for this show manifested in late 2016 in response to political and social concerns regarding women’s rights while political leaders repeatedly degraded and assaulted women’s bodies. As their actions supported a social climate where this was seen as permissible and led to renewed attacks on women’s access to health care and the right to make decisions about their own bodies, the artists and writers felt compelled to create work that addressed these issues. The project evolved into an exploration of complex and nuanced stories of female resistance, as varied and individualistic as the women who stepped forward to participate.
Please note that the images for Bodies of Resistance are nude. Collaborators made this decision primarily because it is women’s bodies – literally and figuratively – that are subjected to violence, scrutiny and control. The strong, powerful, and even serene poses the models have chosen counter these attacks.
For some models, participating in this project was itself an act of resistance and reclamation of personal power. From an artistic perspective, the natural form, in all its diversity, is sacred, beautiful and powerful to behold.
