VIOLENCE PREVENTION: The Impact and Ecosystem of Domestic Violence in Minnesota

October 1, 2025 — Every year Violence Free Minnesota (VFMN) shares on October 1 — as Domestic Violence Awareness month begins — a snapshot of how Minnesota communities have been impacted by domestic violence, naming the victims of the previous year. As VFMN reminds us in this year’s 2024 Homicide Report, the entire ecosystem — from media to health care to the legal system — is part of the environment that can make a difference in recognizing, naming, and responding to abusive behavior. The following are glimpses of the 76-page report, released today.

The Homicide Case That Got Extensive Media Attention

One of the most widely reported domestic violence-related homicides occurred in February 2024, when three police officers were killed by a long-time abusive man, who manipulated the system and partners in many ways — often through coercive control. This story received a lot of media attention because police officers were killed. The last abused partner, who was the mother of several of the seven children held hostage that night, was recently imprisoned for four years. Much less media attention was paid to the nature of coercive control (the subject of an upcoming story in Minnesota Women’s Press from our recent forum in Saint Cloud), the patterned years of physical and sexual abuse of the mother and one of the children, and a court system that granted the abuser custody of all of his children despite a conviction for assault.
