My view of the media business I love is that we tend to be reactive, writing for a passive audience. But our most engaged readers are NOT passive, and want to get in front of the stories, to change outcomes.
We are all survivors of the human condition. All of us are attempting to make our way through the world. If we could go across the room and ask everybody to tell us “what makes you happy, what makes you sad, what challenge you have had in life, what success you have had, what makes you tick” — three things would happen.
Treat each other with true kindness and humility and gentleness and love, because that is our way forward. That is how we are going to find ways to heal the harm that has been inflicted on so many of us, and the land, and the water.
We also have never had a Black woman in the senate. There are five Black women running this year to change that. Our Latina representation is also in danger in the senate with the retirements of Senator Patricia Torres Ray and Melisa Lopez Franzen. So, we can do better.
Even if you restructure the prison system, even if you abolish the prison system, you will still have child welfare, and child welfare — like every system — adapts. In Los Angeles, the largest group of people who are on death row come from the foster care system.
