DetailsOn Friday, December 7, 2012 from 7:30 to 9:00 pm, Or Emet, the Minnesota Congregation for Humanistic Judaism, will present a panel of four Or Emet members, Faith and Steve Oremland and Janet Mayer and Paul Petzschke. They will examine how their recent visit to Israel with a Humanistic rabbi as guide affected their thinking on Israelís culture, religion and politics. The goal of the program is to generate dialogue and reflection on oneís relationship to the state of Israel. The program will take place at the Minneapolis Sabes Jewish Community Center (http://sabesjcc.org/directions.htm, 4330 Cedar Lake Rd. S., St. Louis Park. A short Humanistic Jewish Sabbath service will precede the program, which is free and open to the public. An Oneg Shabbat reception will follow. Background Information: Four questions will be put to the panel, followed by questions and comments from the audience. The panelistsí diverse backgrounds and commitment to Secular Humanistic Judaism should stimulate a lively discussion. Each of the panelists comes from a different upbringing and different experiences that have shaped their feelings about Israel: Faith comes from an Orthodox Jewish family, while Steve comes from a childhood with little celebration of Jewish holidays or ritual. Janetís parents fled Hitlerís Austria and eventually settled in a NJ suburb within a reform Jewish community. Paulís Jewish mother died when he was an infant, and his adoptive non-Jewish parents were political refugees from Germany. This is not your typical travelogue.
