Live BIG
Kathy Magnuson and Norma Smith Olson

"To me, 'living big' means living life to your fullest potential." -Mayda read her story

by Kathy Magnuson & Norma Smith Olson

Saying "yes" can lead to living big. For Christina Aquino it was saying "yes" to gardening with inmates at the correctional facility in Red Wing. For Mary Hanson it was saying "yes" to her impulse to ask for her own radio show. For Sheila Callendar it was saying "yes" to helping to build a preschool in Ghana. For Carla Semple it was saying "yes" to becoming a Big Sister. Their stories are in these pages.

"Living BIG" is one of this issue's themes with stories about where "yes" has taken women. Sometimes it's simply following your gut on faith, saying "yes" to something you are not sure of. For some women, it's identifying what they want in life, be it possessions or meaning and purpose.

What do women want? In this issue we also report the results of our annual readers' survey of favorite things, places and people. Need a suggestion about places to go for a girlfriends' night out? Where to get your next tattoo? A good book recommendation? Check out the "What Women Want" section. And besides all of our wants-fun or serious-we know that women in Minnesota have many needs. Jobs that pay fairly and equitably. High-quality, affordable child care. Safety and a secure world. Accessible reproductive healthcare. Relationships that honor individuals.

Right now progress to meeting these needs is not only slow, but stalled. Did you know that Minnesota has the third highest child care costs in the country? That by midlife 33 percent of Minnesota women have experienced a rape crime? See the results of the annual "Status of Women and Girls in Minnesota" report from the U of M Humphrey Institute's Center on Women and Public Policy and the Women's Foundation of Minnesota.

It's clear there is a lot of work to do yet. We want it, we need it to be done.
