Are we there yet?
Norma Smith Olson and Kathy Magnuson
by Kathy Magnuson and Norma Smith Olson

Rainy Lake in northern Minnesota, kayaking down the Mississippi to New Orleans, sailing from Duluth to the open seas, a trek in the Maine woods, a trip to Jane Austen's home in England, a journey to Africa-we cover a lot of territory in this "women going places" issue.

Travel offers the opportunity to develop our curiosity, test our trust levels and vulnerabilities, learn new ways to cope with stress, fulfill a childhood dream. "Leave the house before you find something worth staying in for," penned Bansky, a British graffiti artist. We agree. Getting out in the world expands your world.

What kind of journey are we on as women working for equality and protecting our rights? Are we moving forward or stepping backward? In May, the Internet news site Alternet put Minnesota on the list of the 10 worst states for women. We came in seventh thanks to some recent bills working through the Legislature that include banning abortions after 20 weeks and banning public funding of abortions. At press time the bills were in conference committee. It concerns us about where we are going as a state. Are we losing our progressive ground?

Writer Shelby Gonzalez writes about facing fear and challenges about travel. Her F.A.C.E. formula could be applied to any life journey-Freeze, Analyze, Change and Enjoy.

Is there a still, small voice inside of you saying "feel me, hear me, feed me," like Barbara Mode Courtney's inner voice that called her to go to Africa?

We hope that you find courage and encouragement in these stories of strong women who are going places. What kind of journey are you on? Are you there yet?
