Common-sense gun legislation

I recently introduced Minnesota legislation (HF 2580) to prohibit the sale of guns to people on the Terrorist Watchlist. After I announced this, two far-right gun groups encouraged their supporters to help stop this legislation. I have received a lot of calls and emails about my bill. Criticism is nothing new to me. I've dealt with death threats and all sorts of harassment as I've served at the Capitol.

But vulgar, name-calling rants like I have received on this issue show just how important it is that we're louder as we voice our support for common-sense gun legislation than those who oppose it - and that we're more polite. While we must speak up for progressive change to address the real problems facing our community and our state, we must never resort to their tactics of violence and intimidation. The February "Women & Guns" magazine was powerful!

It strikes me that the solution to the seemingly intractable gun problem in America may be found by women. Maybe it will take womens' raised voices to break the log jam that male-controlled legislatures have created over gun issues.

Sarah Taylor Nanista's story about the shooting at the Colorado Springs, Colo., health center was particularly moving. Her dedication and resolve is quietly heroic. [YourStory, MWP, Feb. 2016]
