What do women want?
Thank you for your article about the Rhino Club in Minneapolis. [ThisIssue, MWP, May 2015] I have been extremely upset about having this so-called gentlemen's club in Minneapolis. Are citizens of Minneapolis, both women and men, supposed to accept an upscale gentlemen's club as being just what we want?

I don't want it in our community! I am very disappointed in Mayor Betsy Hodges' and the entire city council's leadership on giving this club a license to operate. This had to be discussed before a decision was made. Perhaps it is all about money in Minneapolis.

We are talking about protecting women. We are providing shelter for women. We are working to stop sex trafficking. Where are the men, whose daughters are being exploited by this business?

I believe that all the sports events and stadiums we are building for Minneapolis attract exactly this kind of clientele. Will other women be in danger when we condone this kind of business?

I would like to hear from the religious community. Are they awake and active or ignoring this development in the community?

Thank you for addressing this issue and giving me an opportunity to voice my opinion. I look forward to reading Minnesota Women's Press every month.
Catherine Martignacco, Minneapolis

Here's my hardy "I hear you, sister!" about the new Rhino strip club in Minneapolis. Our community supports yet another strip club in Minneapolis? And women buy in to tagging along with their husbands or boyfriends to perpetuate the exploitation? This makes no sense to me.

There is an article on porn written by an anonymous man in the August 2015 Redbook magazine. He writes about how harmless it is to consume porn, how nearly every guy you know consumes it and how we as women/spouses/girlfriends should just accept this and pretend not to know they consume porn. He wants us women to help relieve their male guilt!

I am disgusted by this in so many ways - that it's published in a women's magazine, published as anonymous and saying nothing to address the harm to all involved: the participants in the "making of" porn; the men who consume it; the women who deal with the skewed views men hold of women in a sexual sense; the dramatic increase in violence and degradation in porn these days compared to the past.

I've written to Redbook and some of their advertisers.

Her singing eases funeral pain
It was a delight to read the July article about Jayanthi Kyle, the funeral singer, as it reminded me of my life. [Profile, MWP, July 2015] I could resonate with so many of the experiences that she recalled with singing. She is a beautiful woman, and in the picture I could feel her caring spirit and hear her lovely voice. Keep singing, Jayanthi! I have been singing for over 70 years and there are always blessings to give, receive and share.
