A HuffPost analysis revealed that only 12 percent of musical acts at 10 major festivals in 2016 were women. A Duluth-based festival strives to correct this under-representation. Global Roots Festival

Ladama is a four-woman pop and jazz group from Venezuela, Brazil and Colombia that will open the Global Roots Festival. Their mission is to offer "a sonic experience ... that communicates across continents and cultures, with sound and story." Other performers include: Venezuelan artist Betsayda Machado, who sings of her enslaved ancestry and other stories, Sept. 19; Iranian instrumentalist Sahba Motallebi, who specializes in Persian classical music, Sept. 20. Revitalized Native American art forms

Five Native American artists are featured in an exhibit of original beadwork, birch bark and textile artwork at the Minnesota History Center. The artists - Jessica Gokey, Pat Kruse, Denise Lajimodiere, Gwen Westerman and Holly Young - created the artwork as part of the MNHS Native American Artist-in-Residence program.
