ThinkAboutIt April 2013
"I always say, 'Giving women my Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act without the Paycheck Fairness Act is like giving them a nail without the hammer.'"
-Lilly Ledbetter, urging Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act reintroduced earlier this year. It would build on the 2009 Lilly Ledbetter Act and close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act of 1963 that made gender wage discrimination illegal.

Equal Pay Day is April 9
Equal Pay Day demonstrates that to match men's earnings for 2012, women will have to work all of 2012 and then into April 2013. This year Equal Pay Day is being observed on April 9, and women are encouraged to wear red that day to show how far "in the red" they are. Based on 2010 data, women still earn 77 percent of what men earn, with most women of color even lower: African-Americans at 67.7 percent, Latinas, 58.7 percent, and Asian-Americans, 86.6 percent.

Keep calm over this?
The Australian brand Solid Gold Bomb clearly bombed in trying to sell misogynist T-shirts on Amazon's UK website. In a takeoff on the English World War II slogan "Keep Calm and Carry On," the shirts were lettered with such sayings as "Keep Calm and Punch Her," "Keep Calm and Bang On" and "Keep Calm and Grope On."
After public outcry, the shirts were pulled from Amazon.com and the Solid Gold Bomb website; Solid Gold Bomb's social media pages vanished. Company founder Michael Fowler apologized and blamed an automated computer error for randomly generating "Keep Calm" with a list of 700 verbs. He said none of the offensive shirts had been sold.

And watch where you grope ...
Call it instant payback. A man accused of groping a woman on a New York City street tried to flee but didn't make it very far before he went around some orange cones and tumbled 15 feet into an open manhole. "A woman came up to us very distraught," a Consolidated Edison worker told the New York Post. "She was, like, a man came up to her. She said he groped her." The Fire Department found him lying stunned at the bottom of the hole but got him out in about 15 minutes and took him to the hospital with minor injuries. No word on whether the woman filed assault charges.

Japanese advertisers getting a leg up
"Thigh-vertising" is the latest marketing scheme in Japan, whereby young women over 18 are paid $121 for an 8-hour day by a PR company to wear ads stuck on like temporary tattoos in the space between their short skirts and knees. And not just anyone can get their skin in this game: the women hired must document their promotional activities with photos on at least two social networking sites.

Does "thigh-vertising" pass the smell test? Where's the line between marketing and exploitation? Does it pass the reversibility test? Are guys' bodies billboards, too?

Basketball - in bikinis
Let's see, we have the Gophers, the Timberwolves, the Lynx ... and now to add to the area basketball scene, we have the Minnesota Mist. The twist? It's Bikini Basketball. The Mist are part of a new league whose slogan is "Basketball League for Sexy Athletic Ladies." Former Lynx player Tamara Moore, a Minneapolis native, created the team, which expects to begin play this summer.
