On Friday, January 18, 2013 from 7:30 to 9:00 pm, Or Emet, the Minnesota Congregation for Humanistic Judaism, will host Barbara Davis, Director of Great River Tai Chi Chuan in Minneapolis, who will discuss the fascinating similarities between The Analects of Confucius and the Talmud’s The Ethics of the Fathers (Pirke Avot). She will explore their content and significance and what they mean to us in contemporary times.
The program will take place at the Minneapolis Sabes Jewish Community Center (http://sabesjcc.org/directions.htm, 4330 Cedar Lake Rd. S., St. Louis Park. A short Humanistic Jewish Sabbath service will precede the program, which is free and open to the public. An Oneg Shabbat reception will follow.
The Analects of Confucius and the Talmud's Pirke Avot (The Ethics of the Father) are from two radically different cultures and times, yet they seem to have much in common: influential moral teachings, maxims and proverbs that have been handed down through the centuries.
Barbara Davis has a Master's degree in East Asian Studies from the University of Minnesota and is the author of The Taijiquan Classics: An Annotated Translation.
